How to Help Survivors of DV during the Holidays

Posted on

Though the holiday season is a joyous time for many, it can be an especially challenging time for survivors of domestic violence.  November through January is a busy time at the First Step Shelter; we typically see an increase in the number of survivors seeking help and safety. During this time of the year, many survivors need additional emotional support from First Step staff members, survivor advocates, and counselors.  Also, it must be mentioned that roughly 45% of our shelter residents are children who have fled violent homes with a parent.  Because survivors often must flee their homes with little or no money or personal items, it can be difficult for them to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

Due to the increased volume at the First Step Shelter during the holiday season, First Step is reaching out for community support.  You can help support survivors of domestic violence by:

*Contributing to our Shelter Needs List and Holiday Wish-list

-click the links above for printable lists

*Donating a coat for our Coat Drive

-drop off new or gently used coats at the First Step Family Store (911 Indiana, Wichita Falls, TX 76301)

*Making a monetary donation to First Step

-mail a check to PO Box 4085, Wichita Falls, TX 76308

As always, thank you for supporting the survivors we serve!
