How You Can Help
You can make a difference
Helping a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault isn’t as complicated as you might think. You probably have a lot of the skills already. Becoming a First Step volunteer is an excellent way to share those talents while helping to make the world a better place.
Training is available
Initially, you will attend 30 hours of expert training on legal procedures, safely, crisis intervention, and the many complicated issues surrounding domestic violence and sexual assault. After you graduate from training, you’ll work 10 supervised hours at the shelter.
Volunteers work in many areas of service
With your training and supervision complete, you will be ready to work a regular shift on the hotline, help out at the shelter by doing client intakes, or pick up new clients at one of our secure meeting locations. You can give as much time as you can spare. And to help you stay excited and motivated, First Step has regularly scheduled volunteer meetings so you can visit with your class members, meet the other volunteers and the staff, and share ideas for handling complex issues.
We need your help
One of the places where we need help the most is at the shelter. We need volunteers who will work at the shelter on a regular basis to meet with the residents. Your active listening skills and caring will provide our clients with the support they need most.
